May Monthly Recap // breaking my own record and finding new favourites

May was a hell of a rollercoaster month. So much happened, and yet, I was bored out of my mind, with books the only thing to keep me company. I think the most surprising thing that happened to me was probably finishing twenty three books this month?!! TWENTY THREE!! I don’t remember the last time I read so many books in the span of thirty one days. But it was so much fun! I cried, I laughed…then cried some more, struggles of a reader, am I right? I found so many new books I loved, and can’t wait to share them with you! Also, IT’S ALREADY JUNE??!! How did that happen? 2021 needs to chill.

So without further ado, let’s get right to it! Oh, and I’m going to keep my thoughts small, because I don’t want this post to become very long! (*editing Rania shaking her head because this post is still too long*)

Books I Read

  • Rule of Wolves by Leigh Bardugo: the sequel to King of Scars was a little bit better than the last book. That last line has been engraved in my mind, it’s just so powerful! And it’s very open-ended so it leaves a lot of possibilities for future Grishaverse books (which I’m guessing are a long time away). Overall, I really liked this one! [4.5/5]
  • A Night Twice as Long by Andrew Simonet: initially, I was really excited for this one because of the autism rep, but unfortunately it didn’t deliver. The writing also struck me as strange. [2/5]
  • Skyward by Brandon Sanderson: this book surpassed all my expectations! I had so much fun with this one! M-Bot is the best character, and no one can convince me otherwise. [5/5] {favourite #1}
  • Mindset by Dr. Carol S. Dweck: I don’t remember the last time I read a non-fiction book, but this one was not that great. I feel like the author repeated a lot of her points with different examples, which just made it very repetitive. [3/5]
  • Constellations of Scars by Melissa Eskue Ousley: the plot of this book had so much potential. But the execution could have been a lot better. The pacing was way too fast and the found family troupe was not the best. But they had me at the ending. [3.5/5]
  • Starsight by Brandon Sanderson: it wasn’t as good as Skyward, and I think it was because it took place in a different place for the most part and a lot of it was about Spensa’s journey, which was lovely to read about, but it didn’t really hit the same. [3.5/5]
  • The Endless Skies by Shannon Price: this book was really good, but the love triangle didn’t cut it. And one thing that really confused me was how casual the characters were about their loved ones dying. Like show a little emotion please. [3.5/5]
  • Today Tonight Tomorrow by Rachel Lynn Solomon: THIS. WAS. SO. FREAKING. CUTE. The rivals-to-lovers trope was done impeccably and Rachel Lynn Solomon is now my new favourite author. [5/5] {favourite #2}
  • The Poppy War trilogy by R. F. Kuang: I finished this whole series in a span of a few days and cannot stop thinking about that gods-damned ending 😭😭 This is definitely not a light read and nothing could have prepared me for what was to come, but I still loved it so much. All these characters are so precious to me and I would do anything for them. [avg rating: 4.5/5] {favourite #3}
  • We Can’t Keep Meeting Like This by Rachel Lynn Solomon: ahhh this was such a cute and fun read! I loved how sex positive it was and the Jewish cultures that were weaved in definitely made it so much better! You can find my full review here. [4.5/5] {favourite #4}
  • The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes: I was very hyped up for this book. Unfortunately, it wasn’t as good as I expected it to be. I don’t know, the plot had a lot of potential, but everything else was just so anticlimatic. [3.5/5]
  • Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune: I’m completely in love with everything about this book. The characters are amazing, the plot is intriguing, and the romance is so wholesome 🥺 [5/5] {favourite #5}
  • The Wrath and the Dawn by Renée Ahdieh: again, I was disappointed. The plot was so good, but everything else just wasn’t. I’m sorry, the romance didn’t do it for me. It might have had some amazing quotes, but that’s it. [3/5]
  • Perfect on Paper by Sophie Gonzales: this book handled the topic of biphobia so well, and I loved it a lot! It’s such a cute contemporary that I finished in one sitting. [5/5] {favourite #6}
  • If This Gets Out by Sophie Gonzales, Cale Dietrich: this book had a few issues with the pacing, but the characters and their inner growth was just fantastic! The romance was the cutest thing ever and I couldn’t help but root for them all throughout this book! [4/5]
  • The Sky Blues by Robbie Couch: at this point, I couldn’t stop myself from reading adorable contemporaries. This book did not go in the direction I was expecting and I loved that so much! It’s not everyday that I read a contemporary that surprises me. [5/5] {favourite #7}
  • The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid: I did not think this book would make me cry. At all. But I guess I was wrong because the writing of this book is just so addictive that you can’t stop reading. I will push this book down all your throats if you haven’t already read this. [5/5] {favourite #8}
  • Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco: I liked it. This book was…okay, and that’s it. I think the reason I didn’t like it that much is because I wasn’t a very big fan of the witchy elements. It’s just not for me. [3.5/5]
  • Heartstopper: Volume Four by Alice Oseman: these characters are just as cute as I remember and I will never have enough of them. ahhh I loved this so much! [5/5]
  • A Dark and Hollow Star by Ashley Shuttleworth: seriously though, what is with me and disappointing fantasy reads this month? I really wanted to like this. But the beginning was just so slow and full of info-dumping that it took me so much time to figure out what was happening. Although, the queer rep in this book was outstanding. [3.5/5]
  • Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim: this was a really good book. It was an easy read and I got through it in a breeze, but something about the romance lowered the rating for me. I don’t know what it was, but I just felt like something was missing. Although their banter is *chefs kiss* [4/5]

Soooo…eight new favourites? And most of them contemporaries? *pats self on the shoulder* Good job, Rania.

Quote of the month

“When you’re given an opportunity to change your life, be ready to do whatever it takes to make it happen. The world doesn’t give things, you take things.”

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Life Updates!

  • May was…messy. A lot happened, and yet I was left bored for the most part of the month. The covid situation in India is slightly better but still pretty severe. I lost someone very close to me due to the virus so my mental health wasn’t exactly the best towards the end of the month, but I’m glad to say that I’m doing relatively better now.
  • Class is resuming from the 7th of June, and I’m so not looking forward to it. I’m pretty sure we’re going to have to give tests a week into school, and gah, I’m not ready y’all. It’s going to drive me up a wall 😭
  • As for what I’m watching, I started Big Shot on Disney+, which is honestly a lot better than I expected. I finished Love, Victor too, which wasn’t the best, but cute nonetheless. I’ve been keeping up with season 2 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (oof, that’s a mouthful), and I love it so far! What have you been watching? Let me know in the comments!
  • I’ve been streaming Sour 24/7 at this point. It’s just so good and the lyrics are very relatable! My favourite song is probably ‘hope ur ok’ because it sent so many chills down my body. What’s yours?
  • I also have plans to start a WIP for a novel idea I got a few days ago. I’ve never managed to maintain what I’m writing for long, but this time I have a pretty good idea of what I want to do, so I’m hoping it will be different! In short, it incorporates Indian traditions and found family, but I don’t know if I’ll end up sticking to that considering how indecisive and fickle-minded I am.
  • I made a Readerly and StoryGraph account! They both have their pros and cons but I’m having quite a lot of fun experimenting with their features. I link my accounts towards the end of the post in case you want to check it out!

Readers’ Pick

So I’ve seen a lot of booktubers do this, and I though why not try it out here? Basically, what I’m going to do is I’m going to put up a poll between 2-3 books and whichever one you guys think I should read this month is what I’m going to try to get to as soon as possible! I already have my June TBR list ready, and it’s full of LGBTQ books as it’s pride month, but I want to put a few fantasies in the mix too, so help me decide! I will reveal the book that got the most votes in my TBR post in a few days!

Also, you won’t be able to see the poll if you’re on WordPress Reader, so head over to the website to vote! This time the poll is between two books, These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong (which, if I’m not wrong, has a trans character and hints at a m/m romance) and Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan (has an f/f romance).

And that’s all for May’s recap! What did you think? How did your month go? Did you find any new favourites too? Let me know in the comments!

  4. Yeah I didn’t think Starsight was as good as Skyward, I just missed our cast. Like where was Kimmalyn??? Where were my wholesome/awkward Sporgen interactions?? Thankfully we’ll be getting some bonus novellas about side characters around the release of book 3…it seems so far away!

    I’ve been wanting to watch S2 of HSMTMTS but I don’t have Disney plus 😭 I’ll probably watch it once the whole season is out. I’ve also had Sour on repeat, I think my fave song is either deja vu or favorite crime. love this post, you did such a good job with it! and tysm for mentioning me💕

      • same!! honestly, I like it a lot! I’m happy Ashlyn got Belle because she’s perfect for the role and really deserves it!! I didn’t expect Ricky to get Beast based on how his audition went but i don’t really mind. all the other castings were also so good! I can totally see Kourtney as Miss Potts! What about you? Also, do you think Nini might come back?

  8. I really need to get started on Brandon Sanderson’s books, I see such glowing reviews everywhere! Haha everyone has voted for These Violent Delights and I did too – I haven’t read the other book yet but TVD was so good (it’s become my new shove-down-others-throat book lol)
    Great post!

  10. OMG Rania, 23 books ! I don’t think I will ever be able to read that much in a month 🥺 and yes The Poppy War ! Glad you had such a blast reading with 8 new favs. And also tysm for mentioning me 🥺🧡. And please read The Jasmine Throne !

    Also it’s so hard to chose between These violent delights and Girls of paper and fire. I enjoyed both. But I think I will chose These violent delights. It’s fun and a lil light hearted compared to GOPAF.
